Product page SEO: titles, descriptions and structured data

The product page is closest to purchase, and the most neglected in optimisation.

6 min read

Someone searching a specific product name is ready to buy. Optimising this page returns faster than any article.

The page title

A practical formula: product name + distinguishing attribute + brand. Avoid filler like "best", "cheapest", "strongest" — they take space and add nothing.

The meta description

Not a direct ranking factor, but it decides click-through. Write a reason to click: shipping, warranty, what makes the product different. Do not paste the first two lines of the description.

The description itself

Open with two sentences answering "why this product?", then move to specifications. Write in the customer's language: if they search using a common colloquial term, include it rather than sticking to the technical one.

Structured data

Mark up the product correctly: price, currency, availability. This is what makes the price appear in search results. And do not put ratings in structured data unless genuine reviews are shown on the page — fabricated ratings are a clear violation that can remove your visibility entirely.

Images

A descriptive filename and alt text explaining what the image shows. Product images are an independent traffic source through image search.

Out-of-stock products

Do not delete the page. Keep it with a clear out-of-stock notice and suggest an alternative. Deleting throws away ranking you built and links pointing at it.
